Sugar Ants in Spring – What to Know
As the weather warms up, you can expect to see increased pest activity. A very common pest you will begin to see are sugar ants. These are the tiny black ants that exclusively feed on sweet food. They will totally ignore other kinds of food in search of sweet ones.
Eric, who work in pest control in Rockledge, FL said the following: “sugar ants are some of your most common pest and ant species. There are literally hundreds of trillions of these things on our continent. Knowing how to attack the problem and following through on it will save you a great deal of headache in the future.”
He suggested that people purchase some of the liquid ant bait specifically designed for sugar ants. You can perform your own pest control duties if you know what you are doing. Simply lay out a few drops of this clear odorless bait on a small piece of cardboard. Place it in the path of the scout ants you see. It won’t be long before they are gobbling it up and taking it back to the nest.
The idea of a bait like this is to trick the ants into taking it back to the nest. Why spend all summer eliminating individual sugar ants when you can attack the entire nest? It’s the most logical and effective approach.
Yes, you will need to allow ants to crawl freely in your home for a few days, but the payoff is worth it. If the ants ignore the bait, then this means you have a different species than a sugar ant. You may want to consult an expert in your area for help. This will save you a lot of time and money which you would otherwise use trying to guess the species and treat the problem.
You have to take action as quickly as possible if you want to nip your sugar ant problem in the bud. If you wait until later in the year, the nest may have grown double or tiple the size making it harder to eradicate.
